What is the most interesting transaction you’ve worked on recently?
Representing Aksiom Group and Ara Partners as first-time clients across both M&A and debt was a very interesting transaction. As with many deals in the current market, the timetable was challenging, but our fantastic team was able to draw on its strength across a range of products to deliver excellent service to our clients.
What is the biggest challenge your clients are currently facing?
The fast-changing environment means that many economic actors are facing an increased lack of predictability, relative to an ordinary market. Given that market sense often drives strategy for many of our clients, we must be aware of how that unpredictability can manifest and be ready to pivot to ensure that our clients receive cutting-edge and dynamic solutions to their legal and business problems.
What deal from your career are you most proud of helping close?
As a very junior lawyer, I was able to work on the restructuring of a large telecoms company. A failed restructuring would have led to thousands of job losses, and emotions were often fraught—not to mention that I felt at sea as a junior lawyer. The deal team worked many sleepless nights, and even at the last minute it looked like there might be problems, but everyone came together to get the restructuring over the line. The relief and fatigue are almost as memorable as the pride.
What do you enjoy most about working in private equity?
Being able to work at the cutting edge of anything is great, and being able to solve problems is a big part of what makes being a lawyer enjoyable. Private equity combines both of those things, and involves working with very talented investment professionals to deliver creative and tangible solutions.
